John C. Shell, III, CPA
John founded John Shell Associates, Inc. in 1982 in the middle of a recession and with no experience in the industry. But his background in public accounting and private industry—combined with some old-fashioned determination, persistence, and hard work—served him well. Today, the firm is one of the premier financial recruiting companies in the state.
A native of South Carolina, John studied accounting at Clemson University—not the career choice you might expect for someone who was a disc jockey, sports reporter, news reporter, and play-by-play baseball broadcaster at a Top 40 radio station in Tennessee during high school and college. Nonetheless, after graduating in 1976, John joined the audit staff of Price Waterhouse in Columbia and later served as Audit Supervisor and Director of Internal Audit for The Seibels Bruce Group, Inc. He is a Certified Public Accountant and a member of the American Institute of CPAs and the South Carolina Association of CPAs.
John is passionate about giving back to his community and his alma mater. He serves on the Senior Advisory Board for the College of Business and Behavioral Science at Clemson, the Board of Directors of the American Association of Finance & Accounting, the Board of Directors of Food for the Soul of Kershaw County, and as an active member of Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church and the Camden Sertoma Club. He and his wife, Claire, have two children.
Lisa R. Bland, CPA
While John is the Clemson fan of the office, Lisa is his USC counterpart. She obtained both her undergraduate degree (1989) and Masters of Taxation (1990) from the University of South Carolina. Actually, Lisa had her choice of schools. Although not an athlete, Lisa was offered an athletic scholarship by another college in South Carolina as an inducement to attract her boyfriend, who was a high school football star.
Lisa began her accounting career in the Columbia office of Arthur Andersen, LLP. She left public accounting in 1995 to become Director of Accounting with Air South Airlines in Columbia, where she worked until becoming a Recruiter and Staffing Consultant with John Shell Associates in 1997. Lisa is a member of the South Carolina Association of CPAs, where she has served on the Accounting Careers and Academic Relations Committee and on the Editorial Board for the CPA Report.
Lisa and her husband Robert reside in Lexington with their two teenagers, 5 cats, a dog and a bunny.
Pamela D. Winfrey
Pamela was born and raised in South Carolina but began her accounting career in Spangdahlem, Germany in 1989 as a Supervisory Accounting Technician / Vault Supervisor with the Non Appropriated Funds Financial Management Group. Pamela returned to the United States in 1994 and graduated from Warner University in Lake Wales, Florida, in 1996 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Organizational Management and has also graduated from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri in 2018 with a Master of Arts Degree in Human Resource Management. Pamela is also a member of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). She has since worked in various accounting positions in Florida and South Carolina.
In 1999, John and Lisa were lucky enough to have Pamela join them at John Shell Associates, Inc. As a Staffing Assistant, she is responsible for processing new employees, background checks, payroll, billing, accounts receivable, and a variety of other tasks.
Pamela lives in Dalzell and has one son. She is a member of New Israel Missionary Baptist Church, where she serves in the choir. She is also part of “All In The Family,” a family gospel group that has been singing for over 25 years at various churches throughout South Carolina. Her diverse range of responsibilities in the office extends to her diverse range of voice—she can sing tenor, alto, and soprano!
